The Benefits of Laser Bacterial Decontamination for Patients With Gum Disease

The prevalence of gum disease in the United States is eye-opening — nearly 65 million adults ages 30 and older have some degree of periodontal disease (47.2% of this demographic). Thankfully, we offer an innovative solution for the healing of your gums, and even reversing, progressive gum disease — the EPIC™ Diode Laser by Biolase.

At our practice, Dr. Nishita Gandhi and our team pride ourselves on offering our patients the latest tools and services to safeguard their dental health. As one of the leading causes of tooth loss, we pay close attention to gum disease, and we’ve equipped ourselves with the cutting-edge technology you need for combatting this degenerative condition. As gum disease progresses, so do to the symptoms, including bleeding of gums and swelling of gums, which can eventually lead to tooth loss and other health issues,

Here’s a look at the many benefits of painless laser bacterial decontamination, which will have you smiling for years to come.

Gum disease at a glance

Before we get into how our innovative laser technology can reverse gum disease, let’s take a quick look at what we’re up against.

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a progressive condition that occurs when harmful bacteria invade your gums. Periodontal disease typically starts out as gingivitis, which describes the inflammation in your gums when bacteria first gain access to these soft tissues.

Left unchecked, these bacteria continue to wreak havoc, causing the bleeding of gums and swelling of gums. Pockets are created, destroying your connective tissues to the point that your gums begin to pull away from your teeth. At this stage, periodontitis sets in, and the infection can spread to the bones that support your teeth. Without intervention, periodontitis can advance and cause the loss of your teeth.

Decontaminating your gums

Since gum disease is progressive, our goal is to halt the infection, restore your gum health, and prevent future problems with periodontitis. To accomplish this, we combine two techniques:

Scaling and root planing

During this nonsurgical procedure, we clear out bacteria-harboring plaque from beneath your gum line and then smooth out the surfaces of your teeth so that bacteria can’t take hold again.

EPIC X Diode laser therapy

Although a scaling and root planing (SRP) procedure is highly effective, we go the extra distance to restore the health of your gums by turning to advanced laser technology. Called laser-assisted periodontal therapy, we’re able to destroy 100% of the harmful bacteria beneath your gums with our state-of-the-art EPIC X Diode laser.

In addition to bacterial decontamination, we also remove diseased tissues with our diode laser to pave the way for healthier tissue to regrow.

This combined technique allows us to reshape your gums by eliminating the pockets, ensuring that the seal between your teeth and gums remains intact.

In fact, one study divided participants with moderate-to-severe gum disease into two groups — one that received a SRP alone and the other that received SRP along with diode laser treatments. Though both groups reported success, the group that received the laser therapy had more evident results and better clinical outcomes.

As an added bonus, our laser-assisted periodontal therapy is minimally invasive, which means there’s little-to-no downtime afterward, and you’ll reach your dental health goals more quickly.

If you’re struggling with gum disease, contact one of our two offices in the Bronx, New York, to explore how our innovative and effective laser-assisted periodontal therapy will give you something to really smile about.
